For both versions:
- 2 sheet of store-bought puff pastry dough (thawed)
- Egg wash (1 egg beaten with a splash of water)
- Icing sugar for dusting
- Heart-shaped cookie cutter
For the Nutella Hearts:
- Nutella (or your favorite chocolate-hazelnut spread)
For the Apple Pie Hearts:
- 2 medium apple, peeled, cored, and diced
- 15ml Butter, Unsalted
- 30ml Brown sugar
- 5ml Ground cinnamon
- A pinch of nutmeg (optional)
- A pinch of Salt
- 5ml Cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for thickening)
Directions
How to Make the Apple Pie Filling
Before we assemble the hearts, let’s make the apple pie filling. It’s super simple and tastes just like the inside of your favorite apple pie!
- In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the diced apple, brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Stir everything together.
- Cook the mixture for about 5–7 minutes, or until the apples start to soften.
- Stir in the cornstarch slurry and continue cooking for another minute, until the mixture thickens.
- Remove from heat and let it cool completely before using.
Assembling the Valentine puff pastry hearts
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out your puff pastry dough slightly to smooth it out. Use your heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out an even number of hearts. You’ll need two hearts for each pastry.
For the Nutella Hearts:
- Spread a small dollop of Nutella in the center of one heart, leaving about 1/4 inch of space around the edges.
- Place a second heart on top and gently press down the edges to seal. Use the tines of a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative finish.
For the Apple Pie Hearts:
- Spoon a small amount of the cooled apple pie filling onto one heart, being careful not to overfill.
- Place a second heart on top, seal the edges by pressing them together, and crimp with a fork.
- Brush the tops of all the hearts with egg wash to give them a beautiful golden shine. If you’re feeling extra creative, sprinkle a little coarse sugar on top for some sparkle!
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until the puff pastry is golden and flaky.
Serving Your Valentine Puff Pastry Hearts
Let the hearts cool slightly before serving (if you can wait that long!). The Nutella hearts are irresistibly gooey and chocolatey, while the apple pie hearts offer a warm, spiced flavor that’s perfect for the season.
Sift some icing sugar over the slightly cooled hearts and enjoy!
These treats are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for a day or two. To reheat, simply pop them in the oven for a few minutes to refresh the puff pastry.
