DIY Rope-wrapped pot

My fascination with plants continues. If you are wondering what I’m on about check out my post on health benefits of having plants inside. https://www.livingdelish.com/bringing-the-outdoor-in/
Anyway, I recently added a beautiful fiddle leaf fig tree to my collection of plants. I just love the broad, dark green leave that makes a striking impact in our home. My biggest problem was to find the right pot for this new addition. I like rope-wrapped pots so naturally I looked for anything that could fit my new fiddle leaf fig tree. With no luck, I decided to do my own DIY Rope-wrapped pot.

Reading up on fiddle leaf fig trees i found that surprisingly they are really easy plants to take care of. As long at they have the correct position in your house and a few general caring rules, they will grow to be beautiful centerpieces in your home.

Caring tips:

Water

First of all, water is the most important part of any plants life. Therefore, I water my fiddle leaf fig tree once a week, wetting the soil thoroughly. Of course it all depends on the season as well as the humidity. For that reason I find that there is no reason to water your tree more than once a week. During the winter it is a different story. Then your fiddle leaf fig needs less water. It is a good idea to only water it every 10-14 days during the winter.

Light

Keep your fiddle leaf fig in bright, indirect sunlight. It just loves light. As a good measure place it no less than 3 meters from a big window. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves.
If your fiddle leaf fig does not receive enough light you will notice that the leaves turning yellow, brown spots appear and the leaves will drop.

Leave care

Since this tree loves sun and light, it is important to keep the leave clean and free of dust. Dusty leaves can cause the plant to suffocate. Once a week wipe down the leaves with a damp cloth. The fiddle leaf tree will have to be rotated each week to ensure that all the leave are exposed to the light source and stop your plant from leaning only to one side.

Repotting

Repotting is an important part of a plant’s life. I would recommend giving your new plant at least a month or so just to get use to its new surroundings before repotting. A fiddle leaf fig tree needs well-draining soil. You can add a thin layer of fine stones at the bottom of your pot. This will help the roots be lifted from any water due to overwatering.
If your soil is too dense adding some wood chips might help to aerate the soil.

Creating your DIY Rope-wrapped pot

So here is some tips before the fun starts. make sure to select the right size pot. It is a good idea to select a pot 2 sizes bigger than the pot the plant came in. This will give your plant some room to grow.

Take care when heating up your glue gun and insert your glue stick, as you can burn easily. I decided to use a glue gun just because the glue dries almost immediately making the wrapping of the pot much easier.
Just watch where you press your rope down onto the pot that there is not hot glue that might end up on your fingers!! 😫

How to create your own DIY Rope-wrapped pot

Step 1 : Get a plastic pot, glue gun, glue sticks and your rope ready for your DIY rope-wrapped pot .
Step 1

What you will need:

  • 15 meters rope
  • Glue gun and plenty of glue sticks
  • Pot (plastic works good)
Step 2: Start glueing your rope to your pot, take care not to burn.
Step 2

Start by glueing a small piece of rope to the brim of your pot. Wait a few seconds for it to dry and then start to glue piece for piece down, Waiting a few seconds between each glueing. Be careful the glue can get very hot, especially when you touch it by accident!!

Step 2 continues: Continue wrapping and gluing your rope until you reach the end of your pot.

Continue wrapping the rope & glueing the rope until you reach the end of your pot.

Step 3: Finish off the end by gluing the last bit of rope onto the pot.
Step 3

I added three rows of rope to the bottom of my pot to round off thing.

When you reach the end of your pot, cut your rope at an angle.
Glue this down to your pot, tucking & glueing down any excess underneath the pot.

DIY-rope wrapped pot all done!

And done!!
